Quantum Design International, Inc. (“Quantum Design”), a provider of automated materials characterization systems and a portfolio company of Carlson Private Capital Partners (“CPC”), has acquired Oxford Instruments plc’s Quantum Business (“NanoScience”), a provider of magnet and cryogenic systems for material characterization and quantum computing.

NanoScience is a developer of superconducting magnet technology and ultra-low temperature cryogenics which creates extreme environments essential for material characterization and quantum computing. The transaction structure involves the sale of a newly formed UK entity plus the sales, service and admin operations carved out of four OI entities, plus the transfer of employees from five OI entities.

Quantum Design is a manufacturer and distributor of instrumentation for material characterization and other advanced research applications. Quantum Design offers instruments that are sold into the world’s leading research institutions, universities, and Fortune 500 companies, enabling advancement in attractive sectors such as batteries, life sciences, computing, nanotechnology, and photovoltaic technologies.

CPC is a private investment firm formed by the Carlson family. CPC invests non-institutional, private, family capital in businesses with the potential to create sustainable long-term value. CPC have a focus on investing in industrial, consumer, distribution, and business services companies as well as perspectives in healthcare and financial services.

The acquisition will add Nanoscience’s ultra-low-temperature cryogenics instrumentation to Quantum Design’s leading physical property measurement systems. It will accelerate new product development and enlarging sales channels.
